A water ring vacuum pump is a type of positive displacement pump that creates a partial vacuum by using a rotating impeller and a water-filled ring to create a seal. The pump works by using centrifugal force to create a liquid ring around the impeller, which is typically filled with water, oil, or another liquid.

Here are the steps in which a water ring vacuum pump works:

  1. The impeller rotates within the pump casing, and a small amount of liquid, such as water, is introduced into the pump casing.

  2. The rotation of the impeller causes the liquid to form a ring around the impeller, which creates a seal.

  3. As the impeller rotates, the space between the vanes in the impeller expands, creating a low-pressure area.

  4. This low-pressure area causes gas or air to be drawn in through the inlet of the pump and into the space between the impeller vanes.

  5. The gas or air is then compressed as it is trapped in the impeller vanes and the liquid ring surrounding the impeller.

  6. The compressed gas or air is then discharged through the outlet of the pump.

  7. As the impeller continues to rotate, the liquid ring is maintained, and the process of drawing in and compressing gas or air is repeated.

The water or other liquid in the pump casing also serves to cool the compressed gas or air, which can get hot due to the compression process. The liquid ring also helps to lubricate the impeller, which reduces wear and tear on the pump.

Water ring vacuum pumps are commonly used in a wide variety of applications, such as chemical processing, food processing, and in industrial processes where the pumping of gases or vapors is required.
